How to Draw the Human Figure

What we'll do

Have you ever looked at a human figure and thought, I wouldn't even know where to begin?

This two-hour workshop is a practical, approachable introduction to drawing the human figure from life. We'll start with the basics: how to look at a pose, where to put your first marks on the page, how to find the main shapes and proportions, and how to gradually build a drawing without getting overwhelmed by details.

Rather than approaching life drawing as an academic exercise in getting everything perfectly accurate, we'll use simple, accessible techniques that help you understand what you're seeing and have fun with the process.

English language instruction

The workshop will be taught in English, but relies primarily on visual demonstration and guidance.  

We'll work with a nude model and do a series of exercises, including:

• how to approach a drawing when you're starting with a blank page
• finding the main movement and shape of a pose
• using simple shapes to construct the figure
• getting a sense of proportion without complicated measuring
• working from the whole figure rather than getting stuck on details
• I'll demonstrate each approach and work with you during the exercises, offering individual suggestions and feedback.

• Complete beginners who have always wanted to try life drawing but don't know where to start
• People who haven't drawn for years and want an easy way back into it
• People who can draw a little but find the human figure intimidating
• Anyone looking for a less academic and more relaxed, expressive approach to life drawing
• You don't need any previous drawing experience.

What to bring

All drawing materials are provided. If you have favorite drawing materials you'd like to use, you're welcome to bring them along.

About the instructor

I've been drawing professionally for more than 20 years, working as an illustrator, designer, animator and visual communications specialist. I've also taught design and visual communication at Prague City University and have been running Prague Life Drawing sessions in Prague for many years.
